Paying for the API

What's free, what costs money, and how your API wallet works.

Who can use the API

People and teams who pay for Taad: a paid plan (or paid seats, for an organization), or money in the API wallet. Free accounts can't make keys.

What's free

Everything that reads or changes your own data: recordings, transcripts, notes, speakers, to-dos, calendar events, search, exports, webhooks and the event log. Only rate limits apply.

The current list is always at GET /v1/prices, no key needed.

A heavier call costs a little more. Some recordings take much more work than usual, a long, dense meeting with many voices, say. When a call costs us more than a normal one of its size, the difference is added at cost, nothing on top. Quiet recordings simply cost the price.

Where the money comes from

  1. Your plan's weekly minutes, for audio sent with a personal key, if you allow it. Your paid plan's minutes come back every Monday at 00:00 UTC; the extra hours you bought for the apps are never touched.
  2. Your API wallet, in US dollars: yours for a personal key, the organization's for an organization key.

In Settings › Developers › Usage you choose: plan minutes first, or the API wallet only (to keep your minutes for recording). Any key can have its own choice too.

Your API wallet

  • Add money in Settings › Developers › Usage: $5 to $500 at a time, on the website. Only an organization's owner adds money to its wallet.
  • Before a paid call runs, its price is set aside. When it's done, it's charged what it really took and the rest is let go. If something fails on our side, nothing is charged.
  • The wallet can dip below zero, by the extra of a heavier call only. Your next top-up covers it first.
  • When it runs low (under $1) and when it's empty, we email you, once a week each, and send the usage.balance_low and usage.exhausted webhook events.
  • No surprise bills: the wallet is prepaid. Nothing charges a card by itself.

Caps

Keys have no spending cap unless you set one. In Settings you can give any key a weekly cap; once it's spent, that key's paid calls answer 402 key_cap_reached until Monday.

Seeing what you spend

  • GET /v1/usage: your wallet, what's set aside, your plan's minutes this week, and what this key spent.
  • GET /v1/wallet/entries: every top-up and charge.
  • Every paid answer carries Taad-Charged-Usd (or Taad-Held-Usd while it runs) and Taad-Balance-Usd.
